Archinesia: Why Architecture Exhibitions Are Important

These last three years were very intense years for architecture exhibitions in Indonesia. In 2014 Indonesia was invited by Rem Koolhaas to take part in the Venice Biennale, one of the most prestigious architecture exhibitions in the world. The motive behind this invitation was more than just emotional or nostalgic (Rem Koolhaas once lived in Indonesia), but rather because he observed and recognized the seeds of architectural movements hidden within the country. He observed this during his trips to Indonesia in the last three years. Therefore, when he was appointed as the chiet curator of the 2014 Venice Architecture Biennale, he decided that Indonesia must participate

The impact of this invitation and participation was quite significant. Architecture exhibitions became a communicable force affecting formal association of architects, government involvement, as well as sporadic young architects' movements. This phenomenon piqued the interest of the editorial team of ARCHINESIA Bookgazine, and we attempted to scrutinize architecture exhibitions in a larger scale, namely within Southeast Asian region, and then reflect on what is really happening inside an architecture exhibition. There is a positive correlation between the development of architecture, architectural education, and architecture exhibitions. And in the cover story of ARCHINESIA Bookgazine vol. 8, we take a deeper look into that. We hope our brief observation and survey of architecture exhibitions in Southeast Asian region would prompt us to think further about the function, role, and influence of architecture exhibitions to the development of architecture. Architecture exhibitions are not merely a vessel through which the best architectural works are exhibited, they are also a medium with which architectural ideas are disseminated and perceptions of architecture are shaped. And we sincerely hope that this notion would continue to develop in the future.
