Tampines inherited its name from the abundance of Tampines trees that grew in the area many years ago. Today, botany enthusiasts who want to study the characteristics of the Tampines tree, or strebulus elongata, which can grow to a majestic 18 metres tall, will have to make their way to Mandai Road, the Botanic Gardens, Biggin Hill or Sentosa Nature Reserve to find the few known existing trees in Singapore.

The Tampines tree is one of the most erters in Peninsular Malaysia, known for its strength, suppleness and durability - aptly symbolising the strength of our leaders and grassroots leaders there.

This book is dedicated to residents of Tampines West, for whom we serve and work together for better tomorrow.
