Health Assessment of Engineered Structures: Bridges, Building and Other Infrastructures
The book consists of twelve chapters. They could be grouped into several theme topics but this is not done since some of the chapters cover multiple themes. However, they are organized according to their major emphasis. SHM/SHA evolved over the time, from simple visual inspections, to hitting something with a hammer and listening to the sound, to exciting the structures (non-model or model based) by static and dynamie loadings, to the most recent development of wireless sensors. After discussing the general concept in Chapter 1. various currently available methods of structural health assessment are presented. Long term monitoring of structures is presented in a separate chapter. Smart sensors are routinely used to assess structural health. Sensor types, platforms and advanced signal processing algorithms, and uncertainty associated with every aspect of the process for practical applications are presented. Wireless collection of sensor data, sensor power needs and on-site energy harvesting are also discussed. Each chapter is authored by the most active scholar(s) in the area.
