Since we wrote volume one of this book in 1976, the tide of interest in appropriate technology has continued to rise. The number of active individuals and groups has multiplied, as have the programs supported by the international community and governments of both rich and poor countries. With so much activity, there appear to be both favorable and unfavorable trends in the way appropriate technology is being thought about and pursued.
