Archipoles: An Urban Design For Growth
Archipoles is one of a series of different studies which the C.R.U. has carried out since its origin on discontinuous cities located on a regular triangular grid arranged accord ing to 60° angles. "Modèles de villes" (C.R.U. 1967) had shown it was possible to provide for all relations which could be wished for at the scale of a city of one million inhabitants, within less than 45 minutes from door-step to door-step, thanks to an under- ground railway system. In "Etudes fondamentales" (C.R.U. 1968), the section entitled "Archipole" had examined the possibility of meet ing all journey requirements in the same type of city , thanks only to private vehicles. This study showed certain dangers and limits to a proper working. It was then taken up again on a different basis, especially where the population and employment distributions are con cerned, according to a polycentric or federated pattern which seems to correspond to a necessity arisen in many large cities. This study is presented under the name of "Archipoles".
