Understanding Building Failures
Much of the insights related to diagnostics in this edition, such as decision making and critical thinking, are derived from the medical and nursing professions. The primary reason for this is that the diagnostics experience and research base of these health-care disciplines is well in advance of that for construction. What makes this revised edition different from many of the other books on building problems is that it addresses the process of defect diagnosis in more detail. Chapter 1, therefore, includes an introduction to the nature and purpose of Building Pathology, the discipline relevant to the study of defects. This is followed by a new chapter on Building Diagnostics, which addresses the problem-solving and decision-making issues relating to investigating defects. Chapter 3 is a new section dealing with the basic methodology for investigating defects. Another new one is Chapter 4, which covers diagnostic aids such as chemical analysis and non-destructive testing that can be used to help achieve a more reliable diagnosis. The section on durability, now Chapter 5, includes coverage on service life assessment. Also contained in this new edition are four new appendices containing a glossary and presenting several sample defects data schedules and reports.
