Modern Foundation Methods
The science of soil mechanics owes its origin to the pioneer work of the late Dr Karl von Terzaghi and many others who have been responsible for introducing scientific method into the overall subject of ground exploration, which is the wider application of this science. The need for adequate site exploration, preparatory to detailed soil examination and testing, was admirably brought out in the Report on the New County Hall, Bedford, prepared by Bernard Clark and Partners in February 1965.1 Here a site investigation was undertaken by a firm of ground exploration engineers in 1962 and six boreholes were sunk in positions, some of which were rather remote from the actual building.
