The introduction of the metric system and other developments as the establishment of the Polytechnics and the setting up of the Business and Technician Education Council have created a need for this new edition. Taking advantage of the opportunity presented by this need, the text has been extensively revised to make it suitable for students taking degree and diploma courses, particularly in Architecture, Building and Surveying, but also for those in the early stages of their studies in Civil and Structural En gineering. The adoption of SI units called for changes in the treatment of the concepts of forces and stresses. This, in turn, lead to some rearrangement of the material which now covers the syllabus of the BTEC standard unit in Structural Mechanics III.
