Engineering In History
This history of engineering is intended to present the development of engineering in Western civilization from its origins into the twentieth century. Although the emphasis is on the advance of engineering through the centuries, the activities of engineers are related to other human activities because engineering has not evolved in a vacuum. It has contributed much to human societies, and in turn these societies have conditioned the progress of engineering. The history of this interaction is discussed with the history of the accumulation of knowledge on which the advance of engineering depends.
