This book sets out to capture some of these happenings; its intention is to act not only as a practical manual from which serials librarians and others concerned with the use and deployment of serials in libraries might learn something to help them in their work, but also as a state-of-the-art. For this reason, our concern is with the present and to a limited extent the future, but not the past. The history of the learned journal is not to be found here, but those who need it could do a lot worse than read Andrew Osborn's account in his excellent book.
