The Secondary Analysis of Survey Data Volume 1
This first volume in the set addresses general issues in relation to secondary analysis, both in terms of the material circumstances in the context of which secondary analysis is conducted, through the creation of data archives, and some of the issues in the philosophy of science which underlie considerations of research design and the analysis of causality in secondary data analysis. Secondary analysis, despite its Durkheimian antecedents at the end of the nineteenth century, is a phenomenon of the second half of the twentieth century in North America and Western Europe. Morris Rosenberg's brief first extract makes the convincing claim that although it does not solve all the problems of social science, secondary analysis "is a powerful weapon in the social science armamentarium ... [which] offers one of the most promising hopes for social science in years to come". This collection is intended to explore and elaborate upon this claim.
