Aesthetics and Material Beauty: Aesthetics Naturalized
This chapter attempts to spark the reader's interest in the problem of beauty by addressing the objective-subjective paradox inherent in aesthetic judgments. While there is a surface layer of idiosyncrasy and variability in aesthetic evaluations—where everyone finds beauty in different places—there also exists an objective layer, especially when one is knowledgeable about a particular kind of object. Aesthetic judgments about valued objects often reflect a deeper appreciation of their relevant features. In this sense, aesthetic experience can inform and enrich one's perception of beauty through the understanding of this objective layer, which novices may be unaware of.
