Visual Methodologies: An Introduction to The Interpretation of Visual Materials
This book is based on a course I taught at the Graduate School for the Social Sciences, Edinburgh University, in 1996, 1997 and 1998. Most thanks must go to the students who took that course, for their enthusiastic engagement with the images I showed them and for their healthy scepticism towards methods text- books. Robert Rojek has been a supportive editor, and Felicity Callard, Mike Crang and Don Slater were constructive readers for Sage. The first edition benefited from useful and pleasurable discussions in Edinburgh about matters visual and inter- pretive with Sue Smith, Charlie Withers and, especially, Mark Dorrian; the second edition is indebted to conversations with colleagues in the Geography Discipline at The Open University. My thanks to them all.
