Solar energy is a viable alternative to present day conventional energy sources for certain applications such as domestic and industrial water heating, space heating and electricity generation. In order that solar equipment and systems evolve from the present-day status of prototype demonstration and monitoring into widespread use, it is imperative that standard test methods of these components and systems be proposed, discussed, formulated and a consensus which should be acceptable to all those concerned be reached. Since solar energy may cater to specific needs in both developed and developing countries, it is recognized that test methods deemed suitable in the former context need not necessarily be so in the later. What is thus needed is an "appropriate testing methods" approach.
