Large-Scale Swedish Solar Heating Technology: System Design and Rating
Several solar heating plants incorporating seasonal heat stores have been built in Sweden for experimental purposes. In order to achieve the maximum benefit in terms of knowledge and experience relating to different types of plants, a mix of designs and sizes has been built, with performance and other aspects being monitored closely. The experience obtained from these plants, together with that from other larger projects, has resulted in the accumulation in Sweden today of internationally unique experience, firmly founded in reality. The objective or experimental building projects is that they should serve as research, development and demonstration in stellations. Today, research and development of solar heating systems with seasonal heat stores have come a considerable way as far as solar collector arrays and system design are concerned. As far as heat stores are concerned, construction methods for uninsulated rock caverns are already well-established, while the design of, and materials used for insulated heat stores require further development if the necessary low capital costs are to be achieved. A large number of calculations for investigation of solar heating systems with seasonal heat stores, are presented in the report. The designs and ratings proposed in the report are directly based on experience from, and research related to the existing plants. The reasoning and analyses in this report have mainly been developed, and follow on, from the work carried out in connection with two of these plants, Ingelstad and Lambohov. How ever, this does not mean that the report is concentrated on these installations as such, but rather on the entire Swedish research programme for solar heating systems with seasonal heat stores. The objective of the report is to collate and summarize the results of this programme of research and to present some of the more important aspects of the technology that can be derived therefrom.
