Design Methods: Seeds of Human Futures
Part 1 is a review of ancient and modern design methods from craft evolution and design-by-drawing to the logical, scientific and creative techniques that have been developed to assist designers and planners in recent years. The new methods are presented as an extension of the methods of the past and are shown to be essential to the planning and evolution of an increasingly complex world. The new methods are de- scribed and classified in a way that makes it easier for designers and planners to find a method that suits a particular design situation.
Part 2 is an outline, with examples, of thirty-five new methods. Each is presented in a simple format with a discussion of its advantages and limitations. The methods include logical procedures such as systematic search and systems engineering, data gathering procedures such as literature searching and the writing of questionnaires, innovative procedures such as brainstorming and synectics, taxonomic procedures such as morphology and system transformation and evaluative procedures such as specification writing and the selection of criteria.
