Squatters In Bangladesh Cities: A Survey of Urban Squatters In Dacca, Chittagong and Khulna

The Centre for Urban Studies was entrusted in August, 1974 with the job of preparing a Survey Report on the Urban Squatters of Dacca, Chitta gong and Khulna. The Survey was sponsored by the Urban Development Directorate, Ministry of Public Works and Urban Development, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. The present volume, entitled SQUATTERS IN BÁNGLADESH CITIES, is the Final Report of the Survey. A Draft Report was submitted to the Directorate earlier in June, 1975. The present Report is based on Field Observations and survey with a Ques tionnaire, prepared by the United Nations Centre for Housing, Building and Planning. The surveys were conducted between August and December, 1974. The Centre wishes to express its gratitude to all who helped during various stages of the work. The Centre is specially grateful to the Dacca University Authorities and the Department of Geography for permission of undertaking the project. We sincerely thank Professor M. Aminul Islam, former Chairman of the Geography Department, for taking keen interest in our work. We also express our thanks to Mr. Abdul Hamid, the former Director of the Urban Development Directorate, for initia ting the Project and Mr. A. C. Das, the present Director, for encouraging us to complete the Report. We are also thankful to Mr. Alauddin Ahmed, Senior Planner of the Urban Development Directorate and Mr. Siddiqur Rahman, Deputy Census Commissioner for their valuable advice.
