The Myth Of Marginality: Urban Poverty and Politics in Rio de Janeiro
The "MYTH OF MARGINALITY" analyzed here is a set of stereotypes about the urban poor of the world, and particularly the poor migrant settlers of jerry-built communities in Latin America. Residents of the favelas, as these places are called in Brazil, are said to be politically alienated, parasites on the economy, inclined toward crime, and altogether a blight on the landscape. Official policy in Brazil has called for the destruction of the favelas and removal of the residents to government- built public housing. Establishment social scientists in the U.S. and Latin American have in the main supported such policies.
