An attempt is made to stress prin ciples and to include just enough detail to illustrate these principles. In a field so dynamic as aviation, airport requirements are constantly under- going revision. Therefore, a complete bibliography of the basic and frequently revised publications governing airport planning and design is included at the end of each chapter. On the staff of the Institute of Transportation and Traffic Engineer ing, University of California, the author is indebted to Professor D. M. Finch for the preparation of Chapter 10 of the text, and to Mr. Walter Gillfillan for contributing and assembling material for a number of chapters in the text, The author is also grateful to Mr. Reginald Suther land of American Airlines and to Mr. Carl Hand of the Federal Aviation Agency for their valuable suggestions, Finally, thanks are extended to industry organizations, consultants, airlines, and aircraft manufacturers for the furnishing of much useful information for this text.
