Mind & Image: An Essay on Art & Architecture
In this book I use the term image to denote a form that acts as a symbol. Through images knowledge and feeling may be elicited from the human experience that has been stored away in the mind to be applied with new life in a new situation. To some extent any object serves as an image in that it can call forth a knowledge-feeling response, but an art image is constituted differently from other objects in that its sense data may be selected and arranged so that it arouses deep layers of awareness affording insights into our personal identity, our bonds with nature, and our com- munion with other men.
