Land and Landscape: Evolution, Design and Control
This important pioneering study, long out of print, has been thoroughly revised, expanded and developed in the light of theory and practice since it was first published 25 years ago. Miss Colvin's combination of shrewd intellect and vision make of the work a full introduction to aesthetic awareness and control of the environment. Here are the history, the principles, the problems, the solutions set out by someone of deep experience.
The first part gives a broad history of land- scape design, showing how it evolved from styles of garden design in many countries. This is followed by an analysis of types of landscape and a study of topography and vegetation. Finally practical questions of siting and design; the interplay of agriculture and urban development; the landscape of towns; provision for recreation; and the fitting of communications into the landscape are dis- cussed in broad terms.
The diagrams and drawings by Richard Westmacott, who is also a landscape con- sultant, and the notable collection of photo- graphs with extended captions fully illustrate Brenda Colvin's themes.
