Models have been used in architectural design for as long as buildings have been planned systematically. Visual demonstration of form has been their main function; but recently greater emphasis has been given to problems of planning, structural behaviour, lighting, venti- lation and acoustics. Quantitative assessment is used to an increasing extent due to the improvement of instruments after the Second World War.
