The Conservation of Building Timbers
At least half the buildings in the United Kingdom contain active infestations by woodboring insects and woodrotting fungi. In an earlier volume by the same author (The Woodworm Problem, 1963) the various aspects of insects which cause this damage were examined, and in The Dry Rot Problem, 1963, the biology of the species of wood-decaying fungi found in buildings was described. This present book develops the theme and gives a detailed and authoritative account of the damage woodworm and rot have caused, based on exhaustive surveys of various types of buildings-private houses; commercial premises, factories, shops; churches, historic buildings, public houses; farms, country estates. Practical methods of dealing with this problem are then authoritatively discussed-methods of preservation and defence against woodrot and woodworm and remedial measures once the damage has been done. This thoroughly practical approach is concluded by a discussion of the legal and insurance questions involved in the problem.
