An Introduction to the Sociology of Rural Development
The usefulness of various theories as analytical tools in the study of social change is discussed. The topics include: modernization approaches, the role of cultural factors in development, Marxist perspectives concerning dependency and the articulation of modes of production, studies of entre- preneurship and decision-making processes, and the sociolo- gical dimension of planned change. As well as using field material from Asia, Africa, and Latin America, the author develops his arguments from existing monographs and his own research and experience. He emphasizes the relation between macro- and micro-level analysis, a theme which he feels will become increasingly important in sociological circles. This book will be an invaluable introduction and source- book to students and teachers of sociology and anthropology, and it will be useful to the non-specialist working in the field of development studies.
