This volume is intended to be introductory. Although the range and historical depth of the material make the theme complex, I have tried to present the argument as simply and coherently as possible. This has been done by using, as far as possible, readily understandable terms and by following a single line of argument throughout. Such a procedure has, however, certain limitations of which the reader should be warned. My perspective is that of political economy but it is not intended to be as scientifically rigorous in its use of terms and concepts as, for example, are certain lines of marxist enquiry.
