Management of Sites and Services Housing Schemes: The Asian Experience
The problem of housing the rapidly growing urban populations of the Third World is seen increasingly in the context of low-income, self-help housing schemes, which involve community participation and flexible planning. This book assesses the Asian experience with sites and services housing schemes. It is based on the experience of fourteen projects from five Asian countries; eight projects are used as 'case studies' to illustrate major issues in the sites and services housing strategy for low-income groups. The book introduces the sites and services concept, and deals with project policy, project planning, project implementation and management/maintenance issues. Infrastructure and housing standards, financial issues and institutional aspects are highlighted. The book ends with a discussion of the future and of this approach to low-income housing strategy. This textbook for students of architecture, social administration, planning and development studies, should also be a useful training manual for practitioners of housing administration in the Third World.
