Slums and Community Development: Experiments In Self-Help
In this book, I have analyzed the slum as a social and cultural phenomenon, bringing together relevant research materials about slums in Western and non-Western societies. I have also dealt with the problems and processes of planned social change, particularly through the new approach of urban community development, which focuses on building citizen participation, integrating local communities, and developing self-help.
In various parts of the world today, there is increasing interest in developing community feeling and citizen responsibility within large urban areas and in the possibilities of self-help as a dynamic force for change. I have included a discussion of many of these efforts as they relate to the slums. In particular, I have presented a case study of an experimental project to change the slums of India through community development.
