Optimization of Transport Networks
Transportation is an important sector of society in which many decisions must be made. In the search for the right decisions to be taken, mathematical techniques for transport network optimization can be of great help. In this book the transport network optimization problem is stated mathe matically and then an extensive and detailed survey of the most important and best-known methods of solving this problem is given. For this survey special attention is directed to the applicability of the solution methods to large networks. Moreover a new technique is presented which yields a reasonable solution for large networks in a very short computation time. The application of this new technique to a very large existing network, namely the Dutch road network, is discussed as a case study in the second part of the book.
