Kashan: A City and Region of Iran
This book is a study of the development of the medium sized (population 60,000) Iranian city of Kashan and the region (Kashan shahrestan) of which it is the administrative centre. After an introductory chapter giving the general, geographical and historical back grounds, the book falls into two parts. The first (chapters 2-5) is concerned with the region as- a whole and the relationship between the city and its region. Aspects covered include settlement patterns, popu lation trends, housing, education, health facilities and trade. Studies of these topics are related to theoretical concepts such as the settlement hierarchy and central place theory. As well as discussion of the occupational and social structures of the region's population there are detailed studies of land use and settlement morphology based on the author's field work. The second part (chapters 6-10) begins with a discussion of Kashan's position in the urban system of Iran as a whole, and deals in detail with the internal characteristics of the city of Kashan and the smaller towns of the region. These are based largely on field work and cover such topics as urban morphology, industry, commerce, land use and urban ecology.
