The Universal Decimal Classification a Programmed Instruction Course
The application of programmed learning to the teaching and study of classification and indexing is by now, a well established practice, thanks to the pioneering efforts of C. D. Batty, Head of the Department of Information Ketrieval Studies at the College of Librarianship, Wales, who was the first to compile suitable books and whose manner of presentation and systematic approach have been a source of inspiration to me. The present book was originally conceived after I had become acquinted with Batty's texts on Dewey and the Colon Classification and it developed subsequently when it was used as an introductory manual in courses on "Organization of Knowledge" which I taught at the School of Library and Information Services of the University of Maryland. After having been tested and re-tested by subsequent "generations" of students, it is now presented to a wider audience.
