The present volume is an outgrowth of a detailed and comprehensive program of research into manpower issues in librarian-ship, conducted at the University of Maryland and elsewhere by a number of scholars with support from the Office of Education, the National Science Foundation, and the National Library of Medicine.* This broad-scale inquiry was directed toward examining the field's manpower problems with a view to making policy recommendations for the field. The study design called for the problem to be approached from a number of vantage points- sociological, economic, political, organizational, psychological, and educational. The investigators commissioned to conduct the studies were, therefore, drawn from the range of relevant disciplines, with only the project directors coming from the field of librarianship.
