Contemporary Asian Architects
Architecture in Asia has altered dramatically since the mid-1940s when most of the countries on the continent achieved independence. The rate of change has been unprecedented and the scale of development is daunting, making the past decades a fertile period for Asian archi tects in nations where new architecture and new roles for professionals are demanded. While it is true that many Asian countries are poor and that the majority of their populations live in sub-standard conditions, economic growth in the past decades has led to a reassessment of the potential inherent in these societies, many of which play significant regional and international roles. Introducing this emerging and rapidly eventful story is a challenge. My approach, which is illustrative of certain major concerns and tendencies rather than comprehensive, consist of presenting a selection of contemporary ideas, projects, and people - a glimpse into a diverse Asian world from both historical and thematic viewpoints.
