Indonesia Staff Appraisal Report: Fourth Urban Development Project
Indonesia's urban population of 31.4 million (1979 estimate) is about 22% of the country's total population of 140 million. Growing at 3.7% per annun, the urban population's annual increase in Indonesia exceeds that of most developing countries in absolute numbers. Almost 1.2 million persons are added to Indonesia's urban population annually. The growth and distribution of the urban population is uneven: Jakarta, with over 8 million population, accounts for about a quarter of the total urban population and with Surabaya (2.7 million), the next largest, over a third; the ten largest cities encompass about 55% of the urban population; over 40% of the annual growth takes place in Jakarta and Surabaya.
