Housing For Low-Income Urban Families: Economics and Policy in the Developing World
"THIS STUDY IS A PRODUCT of collaboration among World Bank staff members and consultants, reflecting a collective effort rather than an individual one. Initiated by the Development Economics Department to understand the role of housing in urban development and explore strategies for reducing urban poverty, the study was drafted within the Urban and Regional Economics Division. It greatly benefited from close collaboration with the Transportation and Urban Projects Department.
Three individuals made substantial contributions that are difficult to distinguish from my own. Helen Hughes served as the study's mentor, guiding its development through months of research and drafting. Her insights into the housing problem, particularly regarding its impact on economic growth, income distribution, and the tailoring of housing policies for low-income families, significantly shaped the study's analytical framework. She provided the structure for chapter two, much of the valuable content in chapter seven, and insights that enhanced the entire work."
