Principles of Water Quality Control
IN THE period since the first publication of this book public awareness of environmental pollution problems has grown although of late the world economic situation has tended to limit expenditure on environmental protection. To some extent such financial constraints are not altogether undesirable since in their absence costly control measures with little real benefit may be implemented. In any decision-making process it is important that the basic facts are fully understood. In the hope of aiding the proper understanding of water quality control measures the text has been fairly extensively modified to include consideration of current philosophies and techniques. The vital role of water in the developing countries has been recognized by the UN International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade and two new chapters, on Water Quality and Health and Water Supply and Sanitation in Developing Countries, have been added to the text. These cannot cover all the particular problems of developing countries but aim to provide an introduction to the topic. The recommendations for further reading have been expanded to en- courage the reader to develop understanding of the basic concepts and gain a wider appreciation of the topics covered.
As before, the book is primarily intended as a text for undergraduate students in civil engineering and as preliminary reading for graduate students in relevant study areas. It should also be useful for readers wishing to obtain an understanding of water quality control for post-experience training and professional development.
