Foundation Engineering in Difficult Ground

The basis of this book was a conference on Foundation Engineering which was held in Sheffield in September 1976. However, rather than publish the papers in the form of proceedings it was decided to produce a text, which would be of value to the practicing foundation engineer on the one hand and the teacher and student on the other. This involved expanding the number of topics considered in order to provide a more balanced treatment of the subject. The topics were suggested to the individual authors, many of whom have international reputa tions, who, of course, developed their own contributions in their own way. Their style and philosophy has been retained as much as possible, within the concept of the text.
