Thin Shell Concrete Structures
In the 17 years since the first edition, at least five new developments affecting thin shell concrete structures make a second edition desirable. First, the pioneering designers have mostly either died or retired from design so that it is now possible to present a coherent historical perspective on the first 60 years of concrete shell design. More importantly, this new interest in history carries with it the emphasis on long-term full-scale structural behavior as a prerequisite to future design. Studies of the recent past permit a fuller view of design and emphasize to future designers the great extent to which successful structures were built without detailed mathematical theories but with a sound engineering foundation in structures, structural behavior, and construction practice. Because of the recent realization by the profession of the importance in the record of built shells, I have rewritten the first chapter to in clude a historical perspective and to emphasize the simplified but realistic overall behavior of the various shell systems. I have replaced the general mathematical theory by more specific developments in the chapters on analysis (2, 3, 5, and 7) and added an appendix summarizing general theory.
