Multiple Attribute Decision Making: An Introduction
It can be quite difficult for decision makers to make the "best" choice, try as they might. In selecting among alternatives, they must juggle many, sometimes contradictory, goals. They might do well to turn to Multiple Attribute Decision Making (MADM) methods. Formally defined by our authors, MADM means "making preference decisions (e·g·, evaluation, prioritization, selection) over the available alternatives that are charac terized by multiple, usually conflicting, attributes." MADM methodology is rigorous but normative, aimed at improving decision quality. As Drs. Yoon and Hwang felicitously report, Benjamin Franklin referred to his own version as "moral or prudential algebra.
