Aseismic Design Analysis of Buildings
This book was originally translated into English in 1963. Since that time, it has been used in xeroxed form as a training course text at the International Institute of Seismology and Earthquake Engineering (IISEE) in Tokyo. In the ten years since the HSEE was founded under the joint sponsorship of UNESCO and the Japanese government, it has provided intensive training for more than 250 students from forty-three countries. The practical method of design analysis (D-value method) described in this book has thus been introduced in many nations through IISEE trainees, and is widely known among structural engineers. Today, many IISEE graduates play an important part in earthquake engineering in their respective countries. In publishing the English edition, I have revised certain sections of the original Japanese edition in the hope that it will be readily useful for those who may be unfamiliar with structural design methods peculiar to Japan. It will be most gratifying if the formal publication of this English edition can make even a small contribution to resolving some of the many difficult problems faced by engineers and students of aseismic design throughout the world.
