Pathways: Scenarios for Sentences and Paragraph Writing
This book presents the study of grammar and the study of the "whole paper" as inseparable. Seven of Pathways' 18 chapters deal with grammar topics; in these chapters, students examine student essays, read and respond to ideas, and write and revise paragraphs. In Parts II through IV, students are encouraged to apply what they have learned about sentence-level correctness to their own writing as they explore the logical paragraph development and organization of ideas. The last two chapters of the book provide an introduction to essay writing, enabling students to make the transition from paragraphs to essays. This lively, integrated approach leads to greater student interest and better, more fully assimilated writing skills. Chapters 2-18 of Pathways all contain a brief, high-interest professional reading that sets up opportunities for writing and relates the chapter's lesson to the student's own work. These readings encourage students to think about, discuss, and consider their own experiences, and to respond to what they read by writing, strengthening their confidence in the value and worth of their ideas. Most chapters also include sample student essays that serve as realistic models of student writing. "Read and Respond," Part VII, provides extra opportunities to explore the reading-writing connection. Through the readings and the accompanying apparatus, the text stresses that effective writing must evolve from student interest and experience.
